S02E03 - Snow: Nature's Acoustic Treatment
Recording from our Austrian balcony as fresh snow transforms a mountain morning into whispered quiet
Episode 3: Muted by Snow
A Sunday morning on the edge of civilization, where snow reveals the width of mountain space
You know those winter mornings when you wake up and suddenly everything is just so much quieter than it used to be?
This week's episode captures one of those rare moments - recorded from our balcony in the Austrian mountains, where we live (kind of on the edge of civilization) with no neighbors around. The structure of the mountains shields us from traffic noise from the villages below, leaving only nature sounds to fill the space.
While there are not many sounds in this recording, it's more like an experience of a wide field of ambience peppered with some church bells from afar and some bird squeaking now and then. Apart from that its a field of ‘quiet noise’ ;).
Nature's Acoustic Treatment
Snow really is nature's most effective acoustic treatment. Every flake is tiny, but billions of them create this incredible porous surface that just drinks up all the sound waves around them. What you're left with is this sensation of the width of the space - the mountains themselves becoming audible through their quiet.
